The 9-to-10 Step

Cards whose PSA 10 costs far more, or far less, than comparable cards would put it at. Comparable means the top grade turns up about as often on them. A read on today's prices, not a forecast that the gap closes.

How to read this board

01 · WHAT THE BOARD SHOWS

Every card here has a PSA 10 price that sits well outside what comparable cards would put it at. "Cheaper" means the 10 costs less than that range; "pricier" means it costs more. Cards priced inside their range are left off — an ordinary price is not a finding.

02 · WHAT MAKES A CARD COMPARABLE

Cards where the PSA 10 turns up about as often relative to the PSA 9. A card where half the copies gem and a card where a 10 is a lottery ticket are different markets whatever either one costs, so they are never compared to each other.

03 · HOW THE RANGE IS BUILT

We take what those comparable cards charge to move from a 9 to a 10 — the middle half of them, not the average, since the extremes are thin comps and bad listings — and apply it to this card's own PSA 9 price.

04 · OUTSIDE THE RANGE IS NOT A PREDICTION

A card priced under comparable cards is cheap relative to them right now. It is not a forecast that the gap closes. A card can sit outside its range indefinitely for reasons the population figures cannot see — playability, a set's reputation, or one thin market.

05 · POPULATION IS DATED

Prices are live. The population counts behind the grouping are a dated snapshot, so a card graded heavily since may now belong with a different set of cards.
